The Bathroom Decides, Not the Buyer
Most comparisons of these two get muddy in the same place: they list features side by side — padded seat, adjustable legs, drainage holes — as though you were picking a flavour. You are not. They solve different problems, and which problem you have is decided by your bathroom and by one specific physical ability.
Here is the mechanical difference, which is the whole article in one paragraph. A transfer bench is longer than the tub is wide. Two of its legs stand on the bathroom floor outside the tub and two stand inside on the tub floor, so the seat bridges the tub wall. The person sits down on the outside end — a normal sit, at chair height, on dry floor — then slides along the seat, lifting one leg at a time over the wall while seated. At no point do they stand on one leg on a wet surface.
A shower chair does none of that. It sits entirely inside the enclosure, all four feet on the shower pan or tub floor. It is a place to sit once you are already in there. Getting in is still the person's own job: standing, stepping over a threshold, turning around, sitting down on a wet surface. That sequence is precisely when bathroom falls happen.

What "Spans the Tub Wall" Actually Looks Like
People buy the wrong one because the difference is hard to picture from a product photo, where both look like a plastic seat on aluminium legs. Seen from the side, in the bathroom, they are not the same object at all.

Notice what is missing: comfort, looks, personal taste. Those matter once you are inside the right category — they do not decide the category.
Choose a Transfer Bench If Any of These Is True
- The person cannot lift a leg over the tub wall while standing on the other leg — or can, but not reliably, and not when tired.
- They are recovering from hip or knee surgery, or have movement restrictions from a surgeon or therapist.
- They have one-sided weakness after a stroke, or an injury, cast or brace on one leg.
- They have fallen in the bathroom before, or had a near miss at the tub wall.
- A caregiver has to physically assist the transfer — a bench turns a lift into a slide, protecting both people. A gait belt makes that assist safer still.
- The person gets unsteady partway through a shower, so entry has to be effortless enough to leave energy for the rest.
Choose a shower chair if all of these are true
- The enclosure is a walk-in shower with a low or no threshold, or a tub the person still steps into confidently.
- They can enter and turn around safely with a grab bar to hold — the problem is standing for the length of a shower, not getting in.
- The bathroom is small, and a bench's outside legs would block the door or the toilet approach.
The Shower Curtain Problem Nobody Warns You About
This is the most common practical complaint about transfer benches, it is entirely predictable, and almost nobody mentions it before you buy. Because the seat crosses the tub wall, a standard shower curtain cannot close behind it. The curtain is pushed outside the tub where the bench passes through, and water runs along the seat onto the bathroom floor. Within a week you have a wet floor beside a piece of fall-prevention equipment — a new hazard where you were trying to remove one.
Three fixes, all of which we researched:
- A split shower curtain. Made specifically for transfer benches: vertical slits let the liner pass around the bench legs while the rest stays inside the tub, and better ones use a weighted or magnetic hem to hold the seal. Platinum Health, which makes the BenchMate split curtain, states plainly on its own product page that regular shower curtains do not work with bath transfer benches.
- Two overlapping curtains. The low-cost version: hang a second liner so one panel tucks inside the tub behind the bench and the other hangs outside in front of it. Inelegant, works, costs almost nothing.
- A bench designed around the curtain. Drive Medical's Splash Defense transfer bench uses a U-shaped cut-out in the seat so the curtain liner can stay inside the tub — worth a look if you are buying new.
A handheld shower head also cuts the problem at the source, since a spray aimed downward throws far less water at the curtain line than a fixed head aimed across the tub. Put a non-slip bath mat inside the tub and an absorbent mat outside it — the floor beside a bench will get damp, and that is exactly where a wet-footed person stands up. Reading the Spec Sheet: Capacity, Backs, Arms, Footprint
Weight capacity, and what "bariatric" means here
Buy above the user's weight with genuine margin, because a transfer is a dynamic load — lowering yourself quickly, or catching yourself, puts more through the frame than standing weight does. Standard models commonly publish figures in the 250 to 400 lb range: Drive Medical publishes 400 lb for its standard Transfer Tub Bench, and Carex publishes 400 lb for its Universal Bath Seat with Back. Bariatric is not a marketing word here — it means a wider seat and a heavier frame, and Drive Medical publishes 500 lb for its bariatric transfer bench, with a seat around 26.5 inches wide. One caution we noticed while comparing models: sliding-seat benches sometimes carry a lower rating than fixed ones, because the mechanism is the limiting part. Read the number for the exact model, not the brand.
Back or no back
Every transfer bench should have a backrest; a bench without one asks someone to balance during the exact movement you bought it to make safe. For a shower chair the calculus differs — a backless chair or stool is smaller, lighter and easier to store, and if the person sits upright without effort it is a reasonable choice. If there is any doubt, take the back.
Arms
Arms help with sit-to-stand at the end of a shower and give a seated person something to hold during an assisted move. On a transfer bench, placement matters more than presence: you want the arm on the far side, so it never blocks the sliding path. Most decent benches have a reversible back and arm for exactly this reason, which also lets one product suit a tub of either handedness.
Footprint in a small bathroom
This kills more transfer bench purchases than anything else. A bench needs clear floor outside the tub for two legs plus room to approach and sit — and in a small bathroom that space is already the toilet, the vanity or the door swing. Measure first: tub wall to whatever is opposite, tub width at the rim, and tub wall height. If the numbers do not work, a wall-mounted folding seat or a compact shower chair is the honest alternative, not a bench wedged in at an angle.
Two Other Options Worth Knowing About
A shower stool or corner stool suits genuinely tight enclosures. It is a backless seat, sometimes triangular to tuck into a corner, and takes up the least space of anything here. It fits someone who only needs to sit briefly — to wash their feet, or rest halfway through — and has good balance otherwise. A sliding transfer bench is for someone who cannot pivot or scoot at all. The seat slides along a track, so the person is moved across rather than moving themselves, and some models add a seat belt. It is the right call for advanced weakness, pain on rotation, or an assisted transfer where the caregiver should not be lifting. No. A bench or chair supports sitting, while a grab bar supports the moments of standing, turning and catching yourself, which is when most bathroom falls happen. Grab bars also have to be anchored into structure rather than into tile alone: Section 609.8 of the 2010 ADA Standards requires that a 250 lb vertical or horizontal force applied at any point be withstood by the grab bar, the fastener, the mounting device and the supporting structure, so the wall attachment is part of the rating. Ask one question before you compare a single feature: can this person get a leg over the tub wall while standing, safely, on a bad day? If no, you need a transfer bench, and the bathroom needs to make room for one.
